In pursuit of its mission to protect parental rights, MLLC has created an advisory letter informing parents, teachers, and school administrators of parents’ legal right to opt children out of sex education in Massachusetts. You can access it here.
Some schools, at the direction of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, are telling parents that they can’t opt out of instruction on topics like puberty, menstruation, and sexual orientation and gender identity. But this contradicts the plain language of the opt-out law and DESE’s former guidance on these issues. You can read more about this on MFI’s blog post, which you can find here.
If your child’s public school is denying you the legal right to opt your child out of this type of sex education content, show them this advisory. If they still don’t listen, we want to hear from you. You have the right to determine what content is appropriate for your child, and we stand ready to defend that right.
